Guitar Lessons - Drop D Tuning
Drop D Tuning was and is used by everyone from the Beatles to U2!
  1. Loosen your 6th string down a whole step to D-compare the pitch to the 4th string Open (D) or use your tuner.
  2. A couple of reasons why Drop D tuning is so cool is that it allows you to play a D power chord on the bottom 2 or 3 open strings. This makes for a really huge, fat, ringing sound you can't get in standard tuning
Hear the Drop D tuning in these songs:
The Beatles-Dear Prudence(The White Album)
Nirvana-All Apologies(Nevermind)

  • The bend at the 3rd fret, 6th string is something you will really love to play - it sounds totally cool when you alternate it with the open 4th or 5th string
  • Rest on the 1st beat of the 2nd measure by stopping the strings with your left fingers and right palm
  • For muting while playing the last 2 chords, lightly place your 1st or 2nd finger on the third string
  • Play in open D a lot! Try to find some cool riffs and sounds!
  • Listen to songs that are played in Drop D Tuning to get ideas of what you can play
