7th and 12th Position Guitar Scale

Move to a higher position guitar scale to make your solo take off!!

Once you feel comfortable with the open position E Blues guitar scale, you will want to begin moving around the guitar neck more. Learn, practice, and memorize these 7th and 12th position scale below. Then practice and memorize the half and whole step bends from each scale.

ALWAYS TUNE FIRST!

(HEAR IT!) Slow (HEAR IT!) Slow
(HEAR IT!) Fast (HEAR IT!) Fast

Read both the 7th and 12th position E Blues guitar scale

  • 3rd finger can be used on the 4th finger notes of the 12th position scale. Also, if you have trouble bending the 15th fret notes, try your 3rd finger

Play and compare each half step bend to the next fret higher, play and compare each whole step bend(Full) to two frets higher.

Read the half step bends from the 7th position guitar scale

Read the whole step bends from the 7th position guitar scale

  • Check the pitch of half step bends by comparing to 1 fret above (SEE Half Step Bends), whole steps to 2 frets above

  • Then practice the bends with vibrato(SEE Half Bends w/vibrato)

  • Follow fingerings carefully-It might be more comfortable to use the 3rd finger on the 15th fret bends

  • Try making up some licks with the notes of the 7th position or 12th position guitar scale

  • When you feel good playing the scales and bends, try creating a guitar solo with either scale using the methods from the Creating your solo lesson(Use any Practice Track).

  • Move onto Page 2 of this guitar lesson to find cool ways to shift into different scale positions.

  • Try some Runs and Ideas with these new scales and bends
