7th and 12th position Guitar Scale P.2

How are you going to move easily and smoothly between 2 guitar scale positions? I will show you two ways:

    1. Let an open string ring or play an open string just before changing scale positions. I call this longer, 2 measure guitar lick a "phrase"

Practice this phrase 1 by playing and counting it:

PHRASE 1 (HEAR IT!)

Try this guitar phrase that shifts between 2 scale postions

2. Slide to a note in another scale position. Slide up to a higher position or down to a lower position

  • this is a legato slide. You don't pick the note that you slide to
PHRASE 2 (HEAR IT!)

Try this guitar phrase that shifts between 2 scale postions

Slow Practice Track
(HEAR IT!)
Slow Shuffle Track
(HEAR IT!)
Medium Practice Track
(HEAR IT!)
Fast Shuffle Track
(HEAR IT!)
Fast Practice Track
(HEAR IT!)

  • Listen to the phrases

  • Practice counting as you play these phrases

  • Practice these phrases with and without the metronome

  • Practice these phrases with the regular and shuffle practice tracks- play swing eighth notes with the shuffle track!

  • Make up your own phrases using the open note or slide shift - use the E blues open position, 7th position, or 12th position guitar scale

  • Count your own phrases as you play them

  • Practice your phrases with the metronome and practice tracks

  • Play a solo using some phrases like these!
