Access Rock Review-by Mike Abbott
Troy Stetina's Metal Lead Guitar Volume 1 broke the mold for every lead guitar method book that has come before or after it! After teaching thousands of rock guitar students over the last fifteen years, I say this from lots of experience with all levels of guitar students and seeing other method books come into my studio.
Troy's attention to detail will help any player understand and apply some more difficult lead techniques such as bends, cross-string picking, pinch harmonics, finger tapping, speed picking, and more. What I like most is that explanations are brief and easy-to-understand so that your time is spent playing, not reading.
Getting Your Feet Wet..
Troy's first chapter begins with some easy to medium level techniques like hammer-ons, pull-offs, whole-step bends and more. Right away the player is shown some cool, easy riffs which employ these techniques. Rhythmic patterns are also covered. The reader uses these rhythmic patterns in some really fun rock "cliche" riffs. Finally, the player is challenged with a solo which includes all of the techniques introduced in the chapter...you will really dig this!
Wading in further...
In the 2nd chapter, the player is shown the minor pentatonic scale in a couple of more keys and positions. These are very helpful in broadening your understanding of the fret board. Again, a great solo awaits you at the chapter's end. The minor pentatonic and natural minor scales are covered heavily in Chapter 4. This is great because these two scales are integral to playing metal lead guitar...or any genre of rock lead guitar!
Dive In!!
As Chapter 4 continues, the player is show the theory behind these scales and how it relates to developing relative pitch (the ability to hear note relationships or intervals). LOOK OUT..in Chapter 5 and 6 you'd better hold on! Cross-string picking and scale sequencing will turn your world upside-down! Pay attention...these are the tools you'll need to later tear into a Slash solo! The book is wrapped up with harmonics, right-hand tapping, and a solo that will keep you up at night!
Thank you Troy!
