Strumming With Accents

If you want to start sounding more like your favorite guitar players, you had better work on strumming with accents! An accent is a heavier attack on a note or a chord.


Let's start with some simple accenting exercises. You should repeat each figure below at least 4 times. Fig. 1, 2, and 3 are fairly easy and accent on beats 2 and 4 (also known as backbeats). Fig. 4 and 5 are more difficult and accent on the off-beats (beats other than 1,2,3, or 4).

Try these strums with different chords, all down strums, or down and up strums. When you think you have mastered them, try creating your own strum patterns by combining different chords and strum Fig's.
