Buying a New Electric Guitar

In this new series of guitar tips, we will discuss most every facet of the electric guitar. At the end of the series, you will know how to buy an electric guitar that..

  1. Fits your musical taste
  2. Feels Comfortable to play
  3. Has the look you want
  4. Fits your budget

Your Musical Taste

Before you embark on the journey of buying a new guitar, do a little bit of thinking about your musical taste. Go through your CD's or MP3's and check out the guitar sounds that are your favorites.

If you are replacing your current guitar with a new one, think about the things that you like and don't like about the current guitar.

Punk

Do you listen to a lot of punk music.. Green Day, NOFX, Blink 182, The Sex Pistols, etc..? You'll most likely want to buy a Fender Stratocaster with a humbucker in the bridge position, or a Gibson Les Paul.

Billy Joe Armstrong from Green Day and Tom Delonge from Blink use the Fender Stratocaster. Eric Melvin from NOFX and Steve Jones from the Sex Pistols use the Gibson Les Paul.

Metal

The metal guitar sound, whether it be Metallica or System of a Down, is heavily saturated and chunky thanks to the help of really HOT humbucking pickups (and some kickin' amplifiers)! Daron Malakian from System uses an Ibanez Iceman with two humbuckers. Kirk Hammett from Metallica uses ESP guitars (mostly) with EMG humbuckers (they use active electronics). The EMG pickups are very transparent sounding with a lot of high end. They are not as warm as standard humbuckers, but when it comes to thickness and power, they've got it.

Alternative

Interested in buying a guitar with a flexible-alternative sound? There are many electric guitars that would fit the bill. John Frusciante from The Red Hot Chili Peppers has used a few different Fenders including a Fender Mustang and a Fender Jazzmaster. Other guitars brands like Gretsch, Danalectro, Paul Reed Smith, and Parker feature guitars that can produce a wide variety of unique and classic sounds.
