Repeating Scale Patterns On Guitar

Let's take a look at some repeating scale patterns that will build speed and coordination with both the right and left hand.

Here is a scale that hopefully you already know, the E Blues Scale.

the open position E Blues Scale

Now instead of playing the scale notes in order, let's use a different pattern.

Speed Building Pattern 1

Ascending (up) - up 3 notes, down 1, up 3 notes, down 1, etc..

Descending (down the scale) - down 3 notes, up 1, down 3 notes, up 1, etc..

  • Practice them with the metronome
  • Try down/up (alternating) picking when you feel comfortable with the pattern.
