Guitar Solo Lesson - Phrasing and Form

In this guitar solo lesson, we will show you new ways to visualize, approach, and execute a great guitar solo. Using creative exercises developed by Access Rock, you will develop guitar solo skills like phrasing and theme and variation.

Guitar Solo Exercises - Developing Creativity

Creativity and imagination are not attributes which are inherent in us. We can only develop these traits by listening and learning to the world around us, and by practicing the art of imitation and creation.

In this first guitar solo exercise, you will practice creating guitar licks or phrases using a technique I call "Repeating Variations".

In "Repeating Variations", the guitar player repeats a lick or phrase, each time changing one element of the lick, but leaving another element the same. Let's take a look at a couple of guitar solo definitions:

motif - a small musical idea that is a reference point for other ideas in a composition or a solo.

theme - a phrase or melody which stands alone as a complete idea.

variation - a musical idea which retains some of the content of a previous musical idea.

solo lick - a series of notes (usually ten or less) used in a guitar solo.

solo phrase - Two or more licks which combine to form a short melody.

In the examples below, the first lick, "original" is played three times, then the "variation" lick is played three times.

Guitar Solo Exercise 1 (HEAR IT!)

In this exercise, the original and the variation share the same notes or melody. The only element that changes in the variation is the rhythm. After you master these, try to create your own variations off of the original lick.

Practice Track (HEAR IT!!)

  • Practice slowly
  • Try with metronome
  • Try your own melodic variation

Guitar Solo Exercise 2 (HEAR IT!)

In this exercise, the original and the variation share the same rhythm. The only element that changes in the variation is the melody (notes). After you master these, try to create your own variations off of the original lick.

Practice Track (HEAR IT!!)

  • Practice slowly
  • Try with metronome
  • Try your own rhythmic variation
